GM and OnStar Win Edison Awards

From Chevrolet.com:

General Motors has won bronze and silver Edison Awards for two corporate initiatives, its global landfill-free program and OnStar Family Link service, respectively. The competition honors game-changing products, services and processes.
OnStar’s Family Link is an opt-in service allowing OnStar subscribers to stay connected to loved ones using location-based data. Subscribers can visit the Family Link website to view a map with their vehicle’s location and even set up email or text notifications alerting them of its whereabouts. Family Link gives subscribers peace of mind, whether it’s checking on the progress of young drivers or staying updated on family members who may be driving in inclement weather.
GM’s commitment to environmental stewardship helps it to consistently innovate and operate leaner and more efficiently. It recycles 90 percent of its global manufacturing waste and has 105 landfill-free facilities that recycle, reuse or convert to energy all waste from daily operations — more than any other automaker. These efforts help engage the community, reduce environmental impact and generate reuse and recycling revenue. GM developed a blueprint called "The Business Case for Zero Waste" with tips for all companies seeking ways to reduce their waste.

2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel Sets Fuel Economy Standard

From Chevrolet.com:

The new 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, delivers an industry best EPA-estimated 46 MPG on the highway – better than any non-hybrid passenger car in America. It will be available in certain cities this spring and nationwide and in Canada in early fall.
Equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, the latest addition to the Cruze powertrain family has an estimated range of 700 highway miles on one tank of diesel fuel based on the EPA highway estimate and the vehicle’s fuel tank capacity. That’s about 10 hours of highway driving.
“We harnessed generations of diesel expertise to adapt our world-class global engine for the North American market,” said Gary Altman, chief engineer, Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. “The Cruze Diesel is the best diesel passenger car out there. Chevrolet is redefining the meaning of great fuel economy with this car.”

Virtual Reality Tools Used to Improve 2014 Chevrolet Impala Roominess

(photo courtesy:  Chevrolet.com)

From Chevrolet.com:

When professional basketball players and other big-and-tall customers asked Chevrolet for more space and a more comfortable ride in the all-new 2014 Impala, engineers used the latest high-tech tools – including a spaciousness calculator – to create more leg and head room and larger storage areas.
The tool kit also included advanced computer modeling tools, digital human ergonomics models and 3D Cave Automated Virtual Environment.
Some of the updates made to Chevy’s flagship sedan include:
  • Adding nearly two inches of driver legroom by increasing the range of fore/aft adjustment for the front seats;
  • A telescoping steering wheel that allows drivers of varying sizes to reach it comfortably;
  • Redesigning the center console with a low instrument panel to increase knee spread, which adds comfort on long drives and enhances the sense of roominess while keeping controls within easy reach;
  • Expanding rear-seat legroom more than two inches, enabled by the 1.2-inch increased wheelbase and thinner profile front seats;
  • Nearly 19 cubic feet of trunk space – ample room for four golf bags and more space than many full-size sedans.

Chevrolet Volt Drivers Meeting and Exceeding EPA Estimate

From Chevrolet.com:

Chevrolet Volt owners are consistently achieving the published EPA-estimated mileage of 98 MPGe gasoline-free miles, and many are even exceeding it.  Their experience contributes to an out worldly total of 150 million electric-powered Volt driving miles – roughly the distance from Earth to Mars.
The typical Volt owner who regularly charges the vehicle is going 900 miles between fill-ups of the gasoline engine that powers the Volt’s on-board generator. That avoids about $1,300 a year at the pump.
MPGe is a measure of the average distance traveled per unit of energy consumed. The EPA uses it to compare the consumption of alternative fuel vehiclesplug-in electric vehicles and other advanced technology vehicles with the fuel economy of conventional internal combustion vehicles expressed as miles per U.Sgallon of gasoline.
